Happy Home

I found this list on Pinterest, and the girl who pinned it found it somewhere else. Anyway, I love steps like these to making your home more "livable" because, let's face it, us mom's who stay home, we spend A LOT of time AT HOME! ha! I thought these were great, simple ways to make the home a place of refuge, peace and order. Most of the time my home is chaotic, crazy and anything but in order! I am always trying to find ways to improve....

                                                         1. Make your bed.
The book The Happiness Project, explains that this three minute task is one of the simplest habits you can adopt to positively impact your happiness.
2. Bring every room back to “ready.”
I learned this trick from Marilyn Paul’s clever book, It’s Hard to Make a Difference When You Can’t Find Your Keys. It’s a known fact: Clutter causes stress; order creates a haven from it. This mood-boosting routine is simple: Take about three minutes to bring each room back to “ready” before you depart it. (Unless you have a toddler, or a partner who likes to simulate earthquakes, three minutes should be sufficient.)
3. Display sentimental items around your home.
One reason that experiences (and memories of those experiences) make us happier than material things is due to the entire cycle of enjoyment that experiences provide: planning the experience, looking forward to the experience, enjoying the experience, and then remembering the experience. Make your home a gallery of positive memories.
4. Start a one-line-a-day gratitude journal.
Before bed, simply jot down one happy memory from that day. (If you have kids, you can ask them, “What was the best part of today?”) Reflection is an important part of happiness, and pausing to reflect on a positive event from each day cultivates gratitude. (An added bonus: Later, when your memory is defunct, you will already have all of your meaningful adventures recorded!) If you have trouble getting started with journaling, consider buying a book to guide you. Simple Abundance, by Sarah Ban Breathnach, is a great one.
5. If you can’t get out of it, get into it.
This tip comes from The Happiness Project. I love the message: The dishes are not going to clean themselves, so you will do it, and you will like it! (Unless, of course, you can outsource this job, in which case I say: Nice work!) Otherwise, get into doing the dishes. Feel the soothing warm water on your hands. Enjoy the tickle of the tiny bubbles. Crank your favorite album at an unusually loud volume, do a couple fist-pumps while shouting “Can I get a hell yeah for the dishes? Hell! Yeah!” and pretend you love it.
6. Before you get up each morning, set an intent for the day.
In The Art of Happiness, the Dali Lama says “”Every day, think as you wake up: today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it.” Wow. What a wise man. I tend to wake up with a strong visceral reaction that says, “Attention human beings: Be afraid of me before coffee. Be very afraid!” Setting a daily intent makes a huge difference. Your daily intent could be something like “be productive” or “enjoy today’s delicious moments” or it could be something more specific like “say thank you to my loved ones today.” But it should not be another “to do” item on your list.
7. Do small favors for your housemates, expecting nothing in return (not even a thank you!).
(That’s right, I said it: nothing!) Mow the lawn for your husband, but don’t expect him to pat you on the back. Make the bed for your wife, but don’t try to get bonus points for it. Take the trash out for your roommate, just because. The ability to cultivate strong, healthy relationships is one of the biggest contributors to health and happiness, but when you start to keep score, the benefit is lost. (No! It’s YOUR turn to clean up the dog poop!) It’s a well-known fact: When you do good, you feel good.
8. Call at least one friend or family member a day.
You can do this while you clean, while you make the bed, or while you walk the dog. Texts and emails do not count! Make an actual phone call to a loved one, just to chat and catch up. We humans are social beings and studies show that even when we don’t feel like it, even if we are naturally introverted, socializing with our loved ones makes us feel better.
9. Spend money on things that cultivate experiences at home.
Save money for a new grill for parties or a new DVD for family movie night — something that will encourage you to have people over and entertain. Plan a summer barbeque, invite your closest friends, kick back and relax. (And don’t forget to print out the pictures to remember the good times.)
10. Spend a few minutes each day connecting with something greater than yourself.
Whatever your spiritual beliefs — or non-beliefs — may be, studies show that connecting to a high power is correlated with happiness. Just stepping back to realize that we are part of an enormous universe can put some perspective on your annoyance with the those-are-definitely-not-mine-and-they-are-abso-fricking-lutely-repulsive socks under the coffee table. Before bed, spend just a few minutes contemplating something larger than yourself. Take a walk in nature. Write in a journal. Create a sacred space in your home. (Or if spirituality is really not your thing, create a home spa: light some candles, soak in a hot bath, delve into a good book… are you feeling better yet?)

If I Was Cool

I'd have a great blog for you all tonight.

But I am exhausted from this past weekend. We were not home except to sleep. FOR REALZ.

It rained today and I wanted to run and jump in puddles in my new boots.

But. I didn't. I did laundry and dishes and changed diaper and diaper and diaper.

fed four mouths 3 meals and tried to eat and pee for myself in between.

Now it's 9pm and all I want to do is crawl in bed until next week...or tomorrow morning.

To cheer myself up here's a few pictures from Pinterest that make me happy.

7, By Jen Hatmaker

Okay so somehow I got sucked into this girl who's kinda like Francis Chan/David Platt, but for stay at home mommies....haha

That's the best way I can describe her.

As mentioned before, Benji and I have tried and tried to cut/trim/delete/consolidate every little penny we spend each month. Because let's face it, he has a GREAT job but, let's be honest for a moment....being a stay at home mom is rare these days and we DO sacrifice a lot for me to be able to stay at home.

It isn't always my favorite choice, (momentarily speaking like when Emery is peeing in Jesse's room) but it is my choice. I could have worked if I wanted too, Benji was fine with whatever I wanted.

So instead of me working, we bought a smaller house, drove old cars, (until they fell apart) and then my man, my hunter, my hunk of all things 4 wheel drive and TRUCK...he sold his truck and he bought a KIA.

That my friends is called sacrifice for your family. We are still looking for ways to cut back for a few reasons.

1. We want/need to start saving for a "bigger" house, or at least a house with one more room. The price on our house had more to do with location than with the size of it....anyway.
 2. We want to be able for me to travel with Benji as much as possible as WELL as the kids, when he goes on his mission trips every summer. The church pays for him, obviously, but for me and the kiddos we have to pay......and it has always been a desire of mine that as soon as the kids were old enough for us to start taking them on the trips.
 3. SAVINGS, SAVINGS......
 4. Medical bills, medical bills, medical bills. Now I realize to some medical bills "don't really count" because there is just nothing you can do about it. I can't help that Jesse had to come out via C-section then pulled the meningitis stunt.....I also can't help BENJI LADD pulled the meningitis stunt just last month....geeeeeeezzzzzzz!!!!

Anyway me being first born, it makes it incredibly hard for me to know that we "owe" anyone anything. So we are working hard on the hospital bills so that we can have another baby and rack some bills up again!

 5. We also just want to be able to give when we feel led to give. If ya got a zero balance in your account ya can't be giving to the local charity of your choice.

Anyway, you get the point. I'm hoping that together, this year, Benji and I can re-prioritize our budget and cut the "Fat" where it is needed......This 7 book I have a feeling is going to rock my world. I'd encourage anyone to read it themselves. GO FOR IT!

Does This Apply To Groceries?

Benji put me on a budget this month for our "food".....I won't disclose how much it is because that is not really relevant....I will tell you that it is 400 bucks less than what we were spending! WOAH!

Days Of Grace

Weeellll today, day 3, ended on a not so good note. I am exhausted so this is rambly. If rambly is even a word. I stink because I sweat all day and all night in the bed no matter how cool I turn the air down. I didn't get a shower this morning because Jesse had a well check bright and early.

He is perfect of course. Teething and ready for some cereal.

Last night he was up at 1am, 230, 430 and 630....then Emery was up for the day at
745... It is those first 45 minutes to an hour that I really have a hard time with. Waking up after not really sleeping at all is so impossible!

I think Emery is really missing Benji. She acted out way more than usual tonight. It took me like an hour to get her to eat dinner. She behaves better when Benji is around because I am the softy of the parents. Finally I just put her to bed early, which also ended in a screaming match.

She had three paci's and needed one more. Which I couldn't find.....sigh.... finally we both calmed down and she's now in her bed singing.

I fell again at lunch today. My chair fell out from behind me while I was holding Jesse. I think my bags that were hanging on them made it fall when I pushed it back to sit down.

Really embarrassing. Again. This makes fall number 4 in 4 months.

Tomorrow praise the LORD I have a baby sitter coming over for Emery. I think I'm going to take Jesse and get a pedicure. Then I have a lunch date with one of my friends. I can not wait.

I'm just praying that I can find enough grace for Emery and enough grace for myself to make it through the next 7 days.

We Will Survive!

My two adorables lounging in their own ways at the beach this past week.

My goals for this week while Benji is jet setting are few.

1. Keep the kids clean, fed and entertained.

2. Keep myself clean and caffeinated.

3. Catch up on blogger.

4. Catch up on DVR

5. Try and stay on top of my house duties....TRY!

We will survive and we will have fun while doing it.

Once Benji gets home we have a few days then we are off to beach trip #2 with the Ladd clan! Can't wait! Emery has said every day since we got home that she wants "to go to the beach today"....

When In Doubt, Blog

Did I share this picture already?

My brain is mush. I don't know if it will ever return to normal.

These are my small group girls who are...well, did graduate this year! So sad. :( I will miss them so much!

Jesse has ear infection numero 4.

We need to drive to Gainesville tomorrow to drop off Benji's truck so it can get fixed so we can sell it.

I have to pack, which means I have to do laundry, which means I shouldn't be on this computer...so that we will be clothed while we are at summer camp with the youth next week.

Sorry...I got detoured by a phone call, a two year old who HAD to have her toenails painted, her hair braided AND her ponies hair braided.

I also need to throw stuff O.U.T. so that the guy that is going to deep clean my house on Saturday can actually get in my house.

I need to watch the DVD lesson we are teaching in Small groups on Sunday morning so that I can lead the discussion on Sunday, before we leave for Gainesville that afternoon to head to summer camp.

I need to find Jesse a bathing suit. For some reason they are all sold out all...over....town.... which I dashed around last night trying to score one. I failed.

But, instead of doing all these things I need to do I am blogging. Cheap therapy.

My Week In Review

Woahhh! I have mucho news to share here!

Jesse has finally started making it from around 11pm until 630am...then from about 7am until 10am. Which I call sleeping through the night! A few nights have been hit and miss this week, but I think he is getting into schedule of making all night.

Emery also decided this week that she was ready to go pee and poop on the potty. Praise the LORDDDD!!! Seriously, I didn't realize how much this was stressing me out until she did it this week. I feel so much better! I have known for awhile that she was ready I just couldn't get her to do it! Well this week she decided that whatever reward we were offering was good enough for her to submit to our demands...ha!

She has to be able to go, wipe and pull up her pants all by herself by the time she starts K3 in August. Well her birthday is July, 31st so alot of kids have had a while longer to perfect the art of pottying...haha. I am just glad we have the rest of the summer to get it together before she goes to school.

I can say that I am soo so proud of her! all my accomplishments in the past pale in comparison to potty training my child! ha!

This week brings father's day and my birthday. Every 7 years or so my birthday falls on father's day. This year we are celebrating father's day for Benji on Saturday and my birthday on Sunday.

I told Benji all I wanted this year was a clean house and for us to all be home as a family. So we started cleaning tonight and hopefully will be done by Sunday.

He also got me 2 tomato plants. It's kind of late to be planting tomatoes but they already had some fruit on them and they were on sale, so we planted them to see what we get. It stays hot here so long that I think they will give us some good tomatoes for awhile.

I went and got my hair did again today, my birthday gift from my mama. She, my sister and nephew came up yesterday to hang out and go to lunch. Emery and Asher have such a great time playing together.

If Ya don't know by now, my sister takes amazing pictures. Basically any pictures that look professional are either taken by my sis or by one of my friends. I usually only take pictures with my phone, Which is good and bad.... anyway. We had a great time with them, I only wish we lived closer!

DROID Love

Today I am here to admit that I am addicted to my smart phone.

I know, I know, I'm about five years late in jumping on the wagon, BUT I got mine for 100 bucks and I laugh at everyone who paid 500 dollars for an iPhone 5 years ago. :)

One of the biggest reasons I love my phono is the 9 mega pixel camera it has in it.

Every picture I've taken since I got it in February has been taken with my phone. It is so so convenient. I can upload it instantly to my Facebook then I save it to my blog when I use it for a blog post. Every picture you've seen is either from my phone, Benji's phone OR Kathi took it with her camera! Ha! She's a great photographer and I love that she captures so many moments of Emery's life.

I'm still recovering from Benji's trip last week. I am exhausted! Emery has been so difficult lately. I know it's her age but I feel like I fight a new battle every single day.

Yesterday she refused to nap. This behavior is totally new, even when we were having trouble with her getting out of bed at night (which we finally resolved) she was still taking great naps.

Well yesterday she decided it was the day to start acting like a demon possessed two year old.

I ended up holding her door closed for an HOUR while she pulled on the handle and screamed her head off. She was jumping over the baby gate I had put up!

She finally gave up and laid down, slept for an hour. By then Jesse was awake and hungry.

Needless to say that wore me out, physically and emotionally. I still hate hearing her cry, even if I know it's for her own good. Crying for an hour is torture for me as well as for her.

MMO started back again this week, so hopefully we will have a good May with no more hospital stays or sickness!

Once she gets out of school for the summer I'll be frantically searching for ways to entertain her.

I'm Not That Green I Guess

Well....The last few weeks of pregnancy I started buying paper plates since I couldn't keep up with dishes. At Christmas my mom restocked the paper towels that I had sworn off and she brought more when she came up for Jesse's birth.

Now I've decided we're not planting a garden this year.....

I guess I'm not as green as I thought.

The garden thing, well it never works out as good as I imagine. Mostly because we are gone so much during the summer.

Benji usually plants it as my mothers day gift, but this year I want him to build me a raised garden bed instead, so we can compost and so that we can add rich soil and so that he doesn't have to worry about grass getting into the bed every year.

Sounds like a win win to me right?

I would never ever think of using a cloth diaper. Not for a million dollars.

I haven't been to Whole Foods to buy our local eggs in probably 6 months.

But we still recycle. So that counts for something right?

There is just something about a newborn that makes me not as green.

I'll get back to it I swear.

When Jesse's one. That's my goal. :)

Thanks To All You Drug Addicts

I'm baaaack!

Had a baby on the 23rd. Once we got home I found out my home computer had virus..boooo.

I have no idea how it got one. I NEVER open anything that looks like crap on facebook, email or anywhere and we have two years worth of anti virus protection paid for. So I've been waiting to blog so I could share some pictures but, I gave up, it wont' be fixed for a few more days so I'm using Benji's work laptop.

Thanks to all the drug addicts out there I came home from the hospital with only 3 days worth of pain medicine, which for me ain't enough people! I am a wimp when it comes to continuous pain. That constant ache and soreness is wearing me out! Hopefully by Monday, when Benji goes back to work and all the family members quit coming around I will be healed enough to make it.

We are loving our little man. Emery runs in the room every time she's been gone and says "I want to see baby Jesse, Where's baby Jesse?" She loves to hold him and look at him. Both our families have been such big help. They've both taken turns coming and helping with Emery and with Jesse.

I'm starting to get a little stir crazy in the house. Ready to get out into the real world again. It's such a lala land time the few days and weeks after having a baby. So many emotions and ups and downs. I have to admit I've had a harder time than I thought with the whole guilt thing. Yesterday Emery said to me, "Mama maybe you can go to the park with me tomorrow?" It made me feel so bad! I started thinking maybe I should have taken her more, maybe I shouldn't have put her in MMO this year, maybe I should have waited one more year to have another baby....etc. YOU GET THE POINT! ughh. She's adjusted better than I have! Ha.

I must say that I adored Greenville Memorial Hospital. I had the best team of people helping out with my C-section. My doctor is great of course, but the people that helped her, the nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologist were so great. I was really REALLY nervous and they calmed me and talked me through it all.

I also am sooo thankful that Jesse came out healthy and strong. I was really anxious about him breathing okay since we had all that trouble with Emery.

I had as smooth as a delivery as I hoped and could not have asked for anything else. I went back to the O.R. a little after 2pm. They got me set up and numbed up with my spinal block. My Dr. came in around 2:30 and Jesse arrived at 2:51! So amazing!

Benji once again watched the whole thing! Ha. The nurse anesthetist was a little concerned about Benji watching, but he proved once again he was a man that could handle watching his wife split open for the sake of his children. :)

So we are doing great, Emery loves being a big sister, I love being a mom of two and hopefully on Monday I will still be able to say the same. :)

Dreary Tuesday

I slept 12 hours last night! I feel great!

So that must be the secret to making it through pregnancy, just go to bed at 8:30 every night????

Anyway, Emery had school today so I did the grocery store sprint and hit up Costco, Publix and Trader Joes, all in the rain BUT kid free! I don't mind the dreary weather most days. But thought we all could use some cheering up.

Parisian style....

Cranberry Heaven

I'm not sure how I could forget my favorite new recipe of the season in my last post, but I did! (I Blame it on the baby hormones.)

Martha Stewart's Cranberry Sauce

One of my friends made this last year for our GNO and I have thought about it ever since. This year when we got together for our thanksgiving meal, I begged her to make it again. It is so fresh and so tangy, and FARRRRR from the canned jelly stuff. It's the perfect side dish for any meal. YUM!

Reason # 234 I Love Greenville

We aint never leavin this city!

I joke all the time (even though I'm kinda serious) that I prayed God would let us serve in a city with a Whole Foods and Starbucks.

Well he did!

I also found that Publix is a main grocery store in town, which I love as much as Whole Foods, for different reasons.

One reason I love Publix is because of their Apron Meals. They regularly sample full meals and always have a stand near by with recipe cards, telling you exactly what ingredients you need for a full meal.

These Apron Meals are super easy, quick and I've never tried one we didn't love.

BUT the reason for this post is to mention that this week Greenville opened it's first TRADER JOES!!!!!!
Hallelujer, Hallelujer!

Trader Joe's is a cross between Whole Foods and Aldi. If you can imagine.

The company is actually owned by Aldi, which isn't widely known I don't think....

Anyway, many items in the store are organic. They follow similar standards as Whole Foods such as no item has any artificial ingredients, colors or preservatives, no genetically modified ingredients, no MSG and no added trans fats. Basically this means I can shop without having to study every label!

Most of the items are Trader Joe's brand, which keeps the cost super low.

They also have super fun specialty items. I'm in love!

SAHM Marathon

I have to admit I've tried really hard not to get overwhelmed too early with thoughts of having two kids.

I mean mom's do it every day with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6!!!!

I have felt so rotten this pregnancy it's been easy to stay in the 'here and now' and be preoccupied with my immediate state of exhaustion. haha.

My life is a paradox of sorts. I have always been a restless soul. I need to travel, I need to try new things, be challenged, enlightened, busy. Change for me is exciting and welcomed (most of the time). But I've always wanted to stay at home and enjoy this season of life with my children.

So the hardest part of being a mother (who stays at home to raise her children) has been the every day monotony. It has been the "actual" staying at home part. I stare at the same walls every day, the majority of the time not having any interaction with adults.

I realize now how women get into financial trouble shopping all day...It's hard to find things to do with a two year old, especially in 90+ degree weather, that doesn't involve some sort of retail establishment.

I do know that this time is precious. I know that it is limited. In three short years Emery will start kindergarten. So I cherish this time, most of the time. I try to not let the small things get to me. I know I'll have a lifetime of being able to keep the kitchen floor free of chalk and cheerios.

But some days it feels like a marathon. It feels like I'm running and running and still have 20 miles to go.

Day Time Love

Guess who has their own new day time T.V. show!!!!!

Oprah may be leaving day time, but she's left us with Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and now cutie patootie interior designer Nate Berkus!

Reason #15 Why I Love Fall

I used to be an all summer, all the time girl. In my aging (I guess that's why haha) I've quickly come to realize that I favor the in between seasons. I love spring because it's the time we get to plant our garden, things are beginning to bloom and everything is so fresh and new.

I love fall for a million reasons however, one of them being that apples are in season! I never cared much for apples until I started paying attention to fruit seasons. Apples can be an amazing yummy snack/meal if eaten in season.

We are planning a trip this weekend up to an apple farm in North Carolina. Emery loves a good apple, so I'm pretty sure she is going to have a blast picking her own.

My New Plan

Emery's in MMO two days a week, we have a new baby on the way and bills bills bills! In an effort to make room for our new addition I'm trying to cut our budget in areas that I've neglected in the past.

This week I started trying to plan and shop for our meals 4 weeks at a time.

I found some great tips at Passionate Homemaking.

I arranged my plan according to my style and our taste.

I've decided to plan for themes rather than full out meals. That way we will have more variety and I can continue to have fun cooking!

My biggest fear in starting this plan is that we will get tired of what I've planned or not be in "the mood" for that certain food once the time comes to eat.

I think I've handled this concern by shopping monthly. I'll have most if not all of my supplies to cook something different if, for example, we don't want Mexican the night I planned for Mexican.....

With all that said, here's my plan:

Monday- Italian
Tuesday- Mexican
Weds-Seafood/fish
Thursday- American/meat and three
Friday-Chicken (We like chicken enough I thought it could be it's own theme.)
Sat-Sandwiches/burgers
Sunday-leftovers/sandwiches/or eat out

I know at least four or more different recipes for each themes.

Ex, Italian could be lasagna, pizza, spaghetti. We also do lemon pasta with shrimp, Alfredo sauce with veggies, etc. Once I start running out of ideas the Internet is my domain.

Mexican, of course tacos, fajitas, steak or chicken, fish tacos, taco soup, Mexican casseroles, etc.

American I figured would be more of our meat and veggie night. Pot roast, grilled chicken, steaks and potatoes, etc.

Chicken night the possibilities are endless.

Sundays will be our day to clean out the fridge of leftovers from the week, and to maybe fellowship with some friends at restaurants.

I plan on stocking up on our meat once a month (or less) at Costco or if I find it on sale at Publix. Benji is a hunter (as you know) and he also processes his own ground venison so we will have plenty of it to replace ground beef.

Okay...Whew! Next I'll tell you why I've given up on couponing and stock piling the pantry! But later, Benji's hunting, Emery's asleep and I've got a date with DVR. Rachel Zoe, RHODC, and season premiere of Gossip Girl are calling my name.

Ginger Snaps, HELLO!

I just made the most amazing cookies ever. I'm not a great baker. Benji takes that title in this house. Not that I can't, I just usually don't have the patience for all the measuring and waiting.

But I made these today, pretty simple and they were worth every measurement!

My house smells so amazing right now, I'd almost make these just to have the aroma, which is better than any candle out there.

Now if the weather would just follow with cooler temps we'd be all set for fall.

p.s I found this on the Fly Through Our Window Blog, and she found it in a Jr. League Cookbook.

Gingersnaps

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ginger
3/4 cup butter-flavor shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
sugar to roll cookies in

Sift the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger together. Cream the shortening and 1 cup of sugar in a mixing bowl. Add the molasses and egg and beat well. Add the flour mixture and mix well. Roll into small balls, adding additional flour if necessary to make the dough easy to handle. Dip in sugar and place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375 for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire racks.

Cajun Spice Rub

This may be your Christmas present, so keep reading only if you think you won't be on my list this year! Ha!

I saw this fab idea on an episode of Homemade Made Simple on TLC. Everyone has been in the kitchen looking for a last minute spice to liven up a steak or chicken that's two seconds from being thrown on the grill.

I'm a fan of rubs because they don't need hours of marinating. Just rub that baby down and throw it on da grill!

These measurements are for individual servings..(as in you would need to do this amount for each person you wish to gift).

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup paprika
2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
1/4 cup garlic powder
1/4 cup onion powder
3 tablespoons dried oregano
3 tablespoons dried thyme
2 tablespoons fennel seeds
1 tablespoon file powder
4 tablespoons salt
4 tablespoons black pepper

This is a rub that sounds great for anything that could be grilled!

Divide portions into cute jars, tie a bow and you have an adorable and thoughtful gift!
