We Survived! 2011

Last year this time I was very much pregnant. Probably sitting on the couch much like I am tonight.

TRYING to make it until 12 am...but I didn't make it and this year I probably won't make it either.

Emery is feeling pretty miserable. I think it is just a virus. She has a nasty cough and a fever. I am PRAYING that tomorrow she feels better.

Jesse had his ENT check up yesterday and his ears are looking good. He is cutting teeth like crazy, 5 now! I know that makes him uncomfortable and he is also getting so frustrated not being able to walk. I think he will definitely be walking before his birthday, but we'll see.

Last year I made no resolutions. I knew I needed to just have a healthy baby and keep him, Emery, myself and Benji alive during the next year!

Well I successfully accomplished that. Emery is now 3 and 1/2 and Jesse almost ONE!!!

I can not believe how fast the year went. This year I am hoping to get back into a better, stable routine around the house.

Those newborn months are hairy! I know I just go into survival mode. This year I am hoping to get back to being more organized about simple things like laundry, dishes, cooking, etc.

I also know I need to get healthy A.G.A.I.N...I try to tell myself that these are just my "plump fertile years" ahaha. But I know I need to lose weight and start exercising again.

I lost most of Emery's baby weight, now I need to lose Jesse's.

I'm leaving you in 2011 with the most precious blessing we received this year! JESSE WALLACE LADD! I am so thankful God saw fit to bless us with the task of raising him.

May I never take that honor for granted.

Chipwrecked

While in Gainesville Kathi, Asher, Emery, Lydia Neysa, Sue and I decided it would be a fun time to take Emery and Asher to their first movie.

Emery has watched The 1st and 2nd Chipmunk movies a THOUSAND times. So I thought she would L.O.V.E. it.

Well, she didn't love it, but she liked it.

I think the part that bothered her was how dark and big the theater was. She kept asking, "how do we get out?" as in where is the exit in case of fire, mom? haha.

I mean is she just like me or what? Anyway the movie was cute,

Emery had to share a seat with Asher because she was too light to sit in it by herself, the seat kept folding up on her..haha.

Fun memories for me and Kathi at least. And they both loved the popcorn and soda.

Because I Was So Good

Thank you Santa and Steve Jobs!

My life just got a whole lot easier.

I've realized in my adulthood that I am actually a minimalist at heart. Meaning the less "stuff" I have in my home, the less clutter the better.

I hate paper laying around. I hate junk mail, I hate thousands of pieces of kid toys laying everywhere. All that clutter seriously sends me into anxiety overload.

If I could gut my house and strip all the carpet out (because carpet also gives me a panic attack. It is so nasty), put hardwoods down and just start fresh in 2012 I would.

BUT having baby and toddler and dog does not a minimalist house make.

However, I'm thinking this MacBook Air will help me in my minimalist journey. It is so streamlined and user friendly. I seriously DID NOT GET IT until I got one. But now I understand. I love you APPLE. Thank you for entering my life.

Dirty Thirty +2

I'll get back to Christmas later.

First I want to share about my sister's birthday. A few of her friends and I have made it a tradition (3rd year) to head down to Atlanta, eat at The Cheesecake Factory, do some shopping at Perimeter mall and then end the night at Cafe Intermezzo.

It made for a long night for me because I drove back to Greenville that night but we had a blast! It's become one of my favorite days of the year and it's not even my birthday!

We are exhausted from a week away from home but we had a great time with both of our families. Emery and Jesse both came home with some kind of cruddy cold. Jesse is getting new teeth every day also so he has been pretty miserable.

I haven't had a chance to get to the grocery since we've gotten home, we have taken down no Christmas decorations, done no laundry from the week and our house is now over flowing with new toys!

I am hoping that this weekend we can get everything back in order before the new year.

I LOVE new years. I think it is one of my favorite holidays. I just love the chance to start over and have all things "new"... We had a crazy past few weeks! Hoping that 2012 brings us peace, routine and order.

Joy and Grief During the Holidays

Last week Benji's grandmother, Dosie passed away.

We scurried around to pack, clean, pay some bills and threw the kids in the car for an unexpected trip home.

Ever since my Dad died the holidays have been tricky. Once I had babies of course the days surrounding the holiday season became joyful again, full of life.

But last week I was reminded again of how hard the holidays are for some. It is just so evident when everyone is sitting around on Christmas morning or at the Christmas meal...that ONE person is missing.

I am thankful that I now have Emery and Jesse to watch experience the joy of the season. This is the first year Emery has been excited about Santa bringing presents. I can not WAIT until the morning we will celebrate here.

I seriously can not even remember where December went. Or November for that matter. Life has just been speeding by so fast. Jesse has 4 teeth now. He is crawling everywhere. Definitely more active than Emery was. He keeps me on my toes for sure. I am constantly balancing chasing him around the house and trying to entertain Emery.

Benji has been working long, hard hours at work this time of year. It seems every season is busier than the last in the ministry. I love it. I love being able to invest in young people's lives but sometimes I just miss my husband and the father of my kids. I wish he could be home more but am thankful for his job and the impact he is making.

I have so many blog post ideas running through my head all the time. At the end of the day, once I get the kids in bed I am just too tired to even think about completing a sentence!

As crazy as things are around this time of year I actually feel like i'm finally getting a grip back on my life. I swear it takes me an entire year to recover from pregnancy and having a new baby. Jesse is SOO fun now! And of course Emery has always been hilarious. She keeps us laughing for sure.

We are all four finally (hopefully) finding our groove as a family. I have to say I am looking forward to the new year. I always love the promise of a fresh start, new beginings...can't wait to celebrate Christmas with my family but I am also looking forward to 2012 rolling in!

Eat Your Veggies

This is one of our favorite meals. Especially Emery's, it is a Publix Green Apron recipe, called Chicken Fried Rice. I swear I have made this 100 times since I found it.

I posted the recipe before on here and Ill try and find the link and link it up ASAP.

Emery is a good eater. Not like a super hero, downs all her food and veggies all the time eater, but I would consider her a good eater. I've never or hardly ever had to make her something else than what we were eating. (unless of course I didn't WANT her to have it, like $20.00lb fillets or something) but even then I usually just give her some of mine because I mean who doesn't love a good fillet.

Here are some of my guidelines I try to follow as I learn about feeding little people. I know a lot of people struggle with this issue, some have BIG issues, but I know we have all had our share of stressful meals. All in all though I feel like Emery is a "balanced" eater- which to me is what is most important.

1. I never ever make her eat everything on her plate. I don't want to cause any issues of over eating, and I feel like this is the biggest way this happens, when we are young we are taught to clean our plates.

Toddlers are naturally able to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full- Adults have forgotten how to do that. Usually distraction is the biggest issue we have, not that she doesn't "like" what we are having, she'd just rather be doing something else than eating. So after she has eaten enough of her plate we tell her to take 2 more bites and she can be done. Sometimes she ends up eating it all, and sometimes she just takes those 2 last bites.

2. I try to focus on the foods she WILL eat and not on the foods she doesn't she isn't big on green beans but she will eat asparagus (go figure) she isn't big on potatoes but she loves rice...she isn't a huge fan of bread for sandwiches but she will eat the meat and cheese so I usually just let her pick it out, if she eats the bread good, if not it's okay.

2a....Example: my kid LOVES salad. I know, it's totally the dressing but on Weds night when we eat supper at church, if she eats her entire salad I don't stress about the fact that she didn't touch her fried chicken nuggets. She loves salad so heck yeah I let her eat it. If she is hungry when we get home from church, late that night, we have a snack....because let's be honest I'm usually hungry too.

3. We don't have a lot of snacks through out the day. I think a huge issue for alot of people is that their kids just aren't hungry at meal time. She usually has breakfast, a snack at school, Lunch, a nap, a snack after nap and then dinner.

The later we eat dinner the better she eats, always! I try to keep her snacks small and I try not to stress about always trying to find a healthy one. sometimes I have fruit (after pay day) sometimes it is all gone and all I have is crackers.

She isn't a big carb eater during meals so I feel like crackers for her are okay at snack.

4. I never offer her a choice...well, technically...I mean at lunch I may ask her if she wants turkey or peanut butter and jelly, but at dinner she eats what we eat.

She has had some digestion issues so we have started having some Activia yogurt right before bed time. She thinks that is a great treat...haha I don't tell her it's healthy!

5. My pediatrician gave me the best advice about toddler eating, it has made me stress alot less about making sure she eats a perfect meal every time. She told me to look at what your child eats over an entire month. If all they eat is chicken nuggets and mac and cheese there may be a problem, but if there is variations of fruits, veggies, carbs, protein, fats and fiber your child is probably doing okay.

6. When In doubt, let them help. Emery LOVES chili! crazy I know....BUT I let her help me make it. I mean all I do is dump cans of beans and tomatoes in the crock pot, she can do that and then she is so proud when she eats it. My chili has tomatoes, green peppers, corn, pinto beans, white beans, onions, chilis, green peppers and ground deer meat. VERY healthy and hearty. I had cheese on top of hers and some sour cream to cool it down and she cleans her bowl every time. I like mine spicy so I just wait until we eat to add the spice to mine.

7. Every thing in moderation. Just like in our own lives I try to teach her moderation in all things. She gets cookies, candy, junk food, etc. but not all day every day. She would eat ice cream every day if I let her BUT I DON'T! But she does eat ice cream. So sometimes when she ask for that certain treat I say yes, why not? Sometimes I say no....because I'm the mom and that is my job.

Okay so I hope that helps some stressed out moms. Trust me our meal times are far from perfect! They are some of the most stressful times I have, but like I said it is mainly because she'd rather be doing something else (like bugging her brother) than eating.

My Bunny

Jesse got tubes on Tuesday. He is doing great and hopefully on the way to being healthy. Here are my 2 men.

Jesse is into every thing!

Benji had a photo shoot this week at our home, in a bunny suit. I don't ask questions anymore.
